Web Development
Web Development, surely that's the same as Web Design? It's not. Web Development is about bringing functionality to design, and making a website behave as expected. As a Web Developer I have created applications from Booking systems and online shops, to simple e-mail forms with validation – That is, checking that the data entered into the form is correct, ie making sure an email address has been entered into the email address field. Web development is about creating the brains behind what you see on screen.
Beyond that, ensuring the code behind a website design/layout is semantically correct and as efficient as possible would also sum up the job I do. Creating something that has the best chance of ranking well on Google, by using clean, efficient, and minimalist code, utilising stylesheets to their full potential for efficiency and reduced loading times, is something I strive to do no matter what website I'm working on.
Web Development is simply about finding out what the client wants and needs, and creating a website that does everything required, as effectively as possible.
I'm regarded as a front-end specialist - but if I'm being honest I think I just love all things web! Frontend, backend, server stuff, etc! While working for drivebusiness I have (very proudly may I add!) built and worked on various well known brand websites, including Reiss and AllSaints to name a few. Since then I've moved to my new company - Nation1, based in our Glasgow office, working with one of the strongest teams around! Watch this space!
