Web Development
Web Development, surely that's the same as Web Design? It's not. Web Development is about bringing functionality to design, and making a website perform properly. As a Web Developer I have created applications from Booking systems and online shops, to simple e-mail forms with validation – That is, checking that the data entered into the form is correct, ie making sure an email address has been entered into the email address field. Web development is about creating the brains behind what you see on screen.
Beyond that, ensuring the code behind a website design/layout is correct, and is as clean and efficient as possible, is also what I'd class as Web Development. Creating something that has the best chance of ranking well on Google, by using clean, efficient, and minimalist code, utilising stylesheets to their full potential, for efficiency and reduced loading times, is something I strive to do no matter what website I'm working on.
Limiting the use of JavaScript - which is browser dependant to a degree - unless neccessary is also something I tend to try and do, and in the cases where javascript is required, I always try and guarentee fallback support, should your browser not support javascript.
Web Development is simply about finding out what the client wants and needs, and creating a website that does everything required, as effectively as possible.
Although my Web Development skills have previously been focused focused on local Ayrshire based clients in the past, while working for drivebusiness I've had the chance to do work for companies further afield, including d2 and AllSaints to name a few and am currently working on projects for both Bench and Hooch clothing brands.
