Web Design
Web Design... what's it all about? Many people – including some Web Designers – think that good Web Design is about creating a website that they deem as being visually attractive. I disagree.
My outlook on what makes a good website goes far beyond that. Of course a website must look good, but in order for a website to succeed – particularly as a marketing tool – it has to meet a number of requirements. The biggest single deterrent for the majority of one hit wonders besides the website not being relevant to them, has to be ease of use – If a website is difficult to use or navigate, it's too easy to jump back onto Google and find information from else where. If you're running a business, that's a potential customer lost. So the key? Stay relevant, create something engaging, that is also simple to use!
Web accessibility standards plays a big part in the work I do. Web accessibility standards? Well, what has happened for many years is that people would create websites with small, fixed sized text which couldn't be adjusted in older versions of Internet Explorer, or they would create what would be graphics, containing text. The biggest problem with this, is that their websites would not cater for visually impaired browsers. Text contained in images, cannot be read by software which could read text to the user, and a lot of small text may annoy a user – another visitor lost to the realms of Google as they search for an alternative website. As a rule, I do a lot of testing in different browsers, in different scenarios, ensuring the websites I build, are cross-browser compatible – A big issue surrounding the internet today!
Google is also very much worth mentioning... again! If a website design is created without much, or any thought for accessibility, the chances are it won't be built in such a way as to fully take advantage of Google's indexing algorithm. In English, you could end up very low in the Google rankings, and as any business minded person knows, if you're not on Google, or don't appear on the first few pages, you're wasting your time and money by even having a website.
So what makes what I do different? The work I've done in the past was created with SEO, accessibility, and design in mind, giving the customer the biggest chance to succeed on the internet.
